The United states has imposed visa bans on unnamed Nigerian politicians believed to have undermined the last elections held in the country. In a twitter post by the US State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus, the US also indicated that it is committed to working with Nigerian government to strenghten democracy and improve respect for human rights.
It is believed that the State Department must have been directly warning Nigerian government about its persistent cases of human rights violations, including the killing of IPOB members and the recent killings of Shiites in Abuja.
According to Morgan
“The United States has imposed visa restrictions on those believed to have undermined the democratic process throughout #Nigeria’s 2019 elections. The U.S. remains committed to working with President Buhari to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and improve respect for #HumanRights“
